Founding Philosophy:
The vision of Seva Mandal Education Society (SMES) is to empower women through quality in nursing education.
The mission is to impart holistic and quality nursing education for developing students into sensitive and conscientious nurses and to equip them to cater to the health care needs of society.
Our Institute adapts to evolving healthcare needs, ensuring graduates uphold ethics and excellence. Through value-based education, we cultivate intellectual growth and moral integrity in future healthcare leaders.
Seva Mandal Education Society (SMES) has been a pioneer in providing quality education to women students ever since it began on a humble note in 1957 with just seven students. The campus at the heart of a thriving educational suburb of Matunga, today hosts seven institutions with over 6000 female students who predominantly come from low socio-economic and conservative backgrounds. Several of our students reside in the nearby locality of Dharavi which is one of the largest slums of Mumbai. They are, in fact, the first generation in their families to pursue a college education with parents being employed in professions such as auto rickshaw/ taxi drivers, vegetable vendors, security guards and household maids.
It is the mission of SMES to offer every opportunity to women students from across every strata of society, to pursue their aspirations and strive for a better quality of life. SMES supports needy women students through various schemes such as free rations, medical checkups and medical aid, scholarships, book bank facility, free notebook, umbrella distribution and personal and family counselling to encourage them to come to the campus and complete their education, thus becoming employable.
All our activities are geared towards the holistic development of our women students in order to equip them with the necessary skills to meet the requirements of the professional world. We constantly strive to cater to women from across sections of society who would otherwise not have the opportunity for further education.
In addition to Nursing education, SMES also provides education in fields like Fashion Design, Nursing, and Hospitality. This is done through the Smt. Shardaben Champaklal Nanavati Institute of Polytechnic and the Smt. Hiraben Manilal Nanavati Junior College of Home Science. With a focus on career readiness, the institutes offer modern facilities, extracurricular activities, and strong mentorship. Initiatives like the Unnati project and a partnership with the Rotary Club enhance skill development and employability. The institutes have high placement rates and have produced numerous gold medalists and merit holders, while also contributing to community outreach programs.
